1964 Mercury 427 dual 4v carbs: Why are the carbs mounted backwards?

I noticed in pictures the throttle linkage is on the right & the choke plate are to the rear. Does this affect performance?

I own a 64 parklane -breezeaway 390 .4v ,every 427 2 4v I have seen the link was on the right along with the fuel log-thats the way it was designed for-the way the the intake is angled.Look in the repair manual.
