Is there any way to switch a pre-2006 computer from (P)ATA/IDE to SATA?
Am planning to upgrade my desktop from the bottom up, which includes replacing the motherboard and making space for a 500GB HD. I was looking through the internet and based on what I’ve read, SATA is better than ATA/IDE/PATA, which looks to be nearly obsolete these days. Unfortunately, because my computer was built before 2006, my current HDs (2 masters, 2 slaves) are linked to each other via the ATA/IDE/PATA system. What do you guys think, should I take the plunge and move to SATA? Or do I just keep my current system? Thanks. ^_^
You won’t likely see any significant difference with the switch from PATA to SATA itself. PATA is basically as fast as most disk drives are anyway — the interface is almost never the speed-limiting factor.
There are two big reasons to go SATA though:
1) A new hard drive will probably be significantly faster than your old drive. This is because of technological improvements in the drive electronics.
2) Most new motherboards don’t have enough PATA ports. One channel is typical, and you’ll probably need to use at least one device on that channel for your CD/DVD drive.
If your motherboard has enough PATA ports, I’d only replace the drives if they were small or old. Old drives are more likely to fail and much slower than modern ones. If they’re modern PATA drives, you can keep them if you have the ports.
You can add a PCI card that adds both SATA and PATA ports. So if your motherboard doesn’t have enough ports, you can certainly add them.
