Cult Psycho-horror Movie “Peeping Tom” has been re-released
“Peeping Tom” was first released way back in 1960 and was savaged by critics everywhere, yet 50 years on, it is now hailed as something of a masterpiece.
Michael Powell’s seminal portrait of a serial killer was written off as exploitative and nasty at the time of release. But perhaps this is actually the film to quote when trying to disprove Francois Truffaut’s infamous saying that there is no such thing as British cinema.
Scripted by Leo Marks, it tells of camera-obsessed oddity Mark, who’s on a mission to find the ultimate in shocking realism.
Crammed with deep Freudian symbolism, Peeping Tom lays bare the dark impulses that lie behind both the making and watching of shock-horror Movies.
This abundantly creepy, and always controversial, British movie never goes out of style. Intelligently directed by Michael Powell (The Red Shoes), the director also plays a key role in the movie as the peeping Tom’s father. He uses his son in his experiments on fear, and the boy grows up to be a psychopathic killer. A cameraman for the movies by trade, this killer’s fetish has to do with photographing the fear in his victims’ faces at the moment of their demise. Some of the means by which he does this are quite ingenious. Of course, the story also allows for many levels of observation on the subject of voyeurism, which may go a long way toward explaining its popularity among film buffs.
The whole film is bathed in an eerie red, which brings the audience uncomfortably close to getting into the mind of the protagonist. Peeping Tom has only recently been awarded its rightful place in cinema history and earned true cult status.
